Crafting a Mihrab: Where Tradition Meets Aotearoa

When you walk into a masjid, your eyes are often drawn to one sacred focal point — the mihrab, the curved niche that faces the qiblah, guiding our rows in prayer. It’s a symbol of direction, unity, and presence — reminding every heart where to turn.

At Hillsborough Masjid, we wanted our mihrab to hold more than just function. We wanted it to tell a story — a story of Islam here in Aotearoa, and of young New Zealanders connecting their craft to faith and beauty.

That’s why we’ve partnered with a talented group of Unitech students, who are working on the woodwork and intricate designs for our masjid’s mihrab. These students are studying design, carpentry, and woodcraft — and their involvement brings a unique dimension to this project: learning through service.

Bridging Craft and Culture

Each student has been researching Islamic geometry, exploring centuries-old design principles that reflect the order, harmony, and oneness found in Allah’s creation. What began as pencil sketches and digital renderings has become a tangible connection between cultures — Islamic heritage meeting Kiwi craftsmanship.

The wood is being carefully shaped to carry traditional motifs while honouring the natural materials of this land. Every curve and line is deliberate — a conversation between form and meaning, between what is seen and what is felt.

For many of the students, this project has been their first encounter with Islamic design philosophy. It has opened up rich discussions about symmetry, intention, and the spiritual symbolism behind every pattern. And for us as a masjid, it’s been a chance to share a glimpse of the beauty that Islam brings into art and daily life.

A Symbol of Community and Continuity

This mihrab is not just being built — it’s being crafted with care, curiosity, and collaboration. It represents what we hope Hillsborough Masjid will continue to be: a place where hearts, hands, and ideas come together for the sake of Allah.

As we watch the design take shape, we’re reminded that a masjid is never built by bricks and wood alone. It’s built by people — by those who learn, contribute, and leave traces of goodness behind them.

We look forward to sharing the finished piece with you soon, in shā’ Allāh. Until then, keep us in your duʿās — that every nail, every pattern, and every prayer here becomes a means of barakah for our community and for generations to come.
